The Professional Certification of Technicians in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry is here!!!!!

Subsequent to a request from the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Industry Association (ARIA) for the certification of technicians in order to have better regulation of the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Sector, the National Ozone Unit (NOU) approached the National Training Agency (NTA) on possible collaboration in establishing such a system based on the National Guidelines Document developed by the NOU. The NTA indicated that it would include this Professional Certification in its work programme, and a team was established between NTA, the NOU and key stakeholders in the sector, including the School of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (SORAC), Metal Industries Company Limited (MIC), National Energy Skills Center (NESC), and the Youth Training and Employment Partnership Programme (YTEPP), to develop this Professional Certification. Consultations were held in Trinidad and Tobago and the proposal revised accordingly.  The System was been finalized based on input from all stakeholders and will be administered by the NTA. The Certification System is also a component of this country's Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) Phase out Management Plan, implementation of which is conducted by the National Ozone Unit and facilitated by the United Nations Development Programme.

The launch took place today, April 12, 2017 at Hilton Trinidad.

Information Session for Plant Quarantine Officers

Information Sessions were held with Plant Quarantine Officers on March 24 and April 3 2017 at Centeno. Methyl Bromide which is ozone depleting, is a gas which is used as a fumigant. As the country has phased out use of methyl bromide in non quarantine and pre shipment (since January 1, 2015), efforts are now being made to improve the use of alternatives to methyl bromide in quarantine and pre shipment (a use still allowed by the Montreal Protocol). Officers were apprised of different alternatives such as Vikane, Eco2Fume, Profume and Heat Treatment.
