Showcasing our Female Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) Trainer- Ms. Margaret Belfon

The National Ozone Unit would like to highlight and congratulate Ms. Margaret Belfon, our Female  Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) Trainer. Thank you for your trail blazing efforts!

In her own words.......

My interest began in this industry; because of the comfort and convenience refrigerators and AC units offered, I was very curious to know how they operated. Due to this I got motivated to pursue a course in the said field I also wanted to acquire a skill which would provide job security.

In 2004 the then Ministry of Science and Technology (Retraining Programme) at the time placed an ad in the daily newspaper with a list of various courses including Refrigeration&/Air Conditioning.

I applied, and my application was successful. I did not give much thought to the fact that this trade was dominated by men I jumped right in. Out of a class of (15) trainees, only 2 females were pursuing this course in the name of Mrs Hazel Kanhai and myself.

Both Level 1&2 training were conducted at MIC-IT. I completed my training in June 2005 and was hired by MIC as an Instructor 2006.

I thank God for the opportunity granted to me through the retraining programme and also the honor to work with and make a difference in the lives of many mainly male and a few female trainees as a Lecturer/Instructor.

Advice to women who are considering the RAC Industry.

  • You can make a great impact on the environment
  • Rewarding compensation
  • Capability to work anywhere
  • Lots of job opportunities
  • Improve the quality of life for you and your customers

Don’t let anyone tell you, you can’t do it, one of my friends tried to daunt me, have a vision keep your focus and you will achieve it.

Sincerely

Margaret Belfon
