Ozone talks from the National Ozone Unit


The National Ozone Unit partnered with In Club House to celebrate World Children's Day 2021 with an interactive educational series on Ozone Layer Protection. Two sessions were held back to back for children in the younger and older age category.

Sensitization on R32


The National Ozone Unit again continued its training and outreach to technicians in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Sector with a Virtual Training on Refrigerants.  This session is the 2nd of four sessions that will focus on the chemical composition of these alternatives in particular Refrigerant R32 (Hydrofluorocarbon 32)  and technical information that is required for good refrigeration practices using these refrigerants.

National Ozone Unit Training on Refrigerants and Good Refrigeration Practices


The National Ozone Unit continued its training and outreach to technicians in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Sector with a Virtual Training on Refrigerants and Good Refrigeration Practices.  This session is a first of four sessions that will focus on the chemical composition of these alternatives and technical information that is required for good refrigeration practices using these refrigerants.

Ozone talk at Trinre Insurance

The National Ozone Unit conducted a talk on Tuesday 23 Nov 2021 for TRINRE insurance company for their health week promotions.  Staff were educated on the importance of sun protection and hiring a certified technician.  The dangers of improper installation and servicing of AC systems were highlighted and its potential impacts on homeowners and vehicular insurance.

Trinidad and Tobago Elected to One of Three Vice Presidents for the Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol for 2022

Trinidad and Tobago has been elected in the position of one of three Vice Presidents to the Bureau of the Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol for the year 2022. The position will be held by Dr. Marissa Gowrie National Ozone Officer of Trinidad and Tobago.

This country has been very successful in its efforts thus far to phase out ozone depleting substances having phased out the imports of cholorofluorocarbons and halons since 2008 two years ahead of schedule. Methyl Bromide for non quaratine purposes was also phased out in 2015. Work is also ongoing to phase out hydrochlorofluorocarbons which began in 2013 and the phase down of hydrofluorocarbons will begin in 2024.

This latest appointment will further signal Trinidad and Tobago's commitment to work toward achieving the goals of the Montreal Protocol.

Ozone Awareness to Students


Despite restrictions due to Covid the National Ozone Unit has distributed ozone awareness packages to students through certain Form 1 registration activities. Information shared was on general ozone awareness as well as how ozone depletion affects climate change and biodiversity.

Combined Twelfth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (Part II) and Thirty-Third Meeting of the Parties

 

The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago participated at the Virtual Combined twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (part II) and Thirty-Third Meeting of the Parties during the period October 23-29, 2021

The online segment took place from Saturday, 23 October 2021 to Friday, 29 October 2021. The final reports and budgets of the trust funds for the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol were presented alongside a status update of the assessment panels. The issues relating to critical use exemptions, membership of Montreal Protocol bodies and funding for the next triennium were also addressed amongst other matters related to the thirteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Vienna Convention and the Thirty-Fourth Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol. Discussions were held in contact groups on Gaps in Monitoring, Energy Efficiency and the Budget Committee.

Trinidad and Tobago was represented at the Combined twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (part II) and Thirty-Third Meeting of the Parties by the following delegation: Dr. Marissa Gowrie  (Head of Delegation) Deputy Environmental Manager/ National Ozone Officer and Mr. Jonathan Bolai Ozone Specialist Environmental Policy and Planning Division






Trinidad and Tobago was also elected to one of three Vice Presidency Posts to the Meeting of the Parties for 2022.

District Cooling Webinar

The GEF Energy Efficiency in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning hosted a Webinar on District Cooling. There was a large turnout with greater than 131 participants globally with representatives from both the public and private sector within Trinidad and Tobago. Strong interest by the private sector to partner with the project was generated, and the project team is exploring these partnerships.  Many technical and business-related questions came out of this session.

Virtual Capacity Building of Refrigerantion and Air Conditioning (RAC) Training Schools

In an effort to ensure that the RAC Training Institutions are kept up to date with the evolving technical information the National Ozone Unit in collaboration with UNDP hosted a 2 day virtual training session with an International RAC Expert . The information in this train the trainers session will be rolled out to the local sector subsequent to the session.

Participants were give a practical demonstration of common power wiring of a circuit board.

Equipment Distribution to Support RAC Training



The National Ozone Unit continued its support to the refrigeration and air conditioning sector through provision of equipment to Metal Industries Company- Institute of Technology (MIC-IT) support training of technicians. This support will also contribute to the implementation of the professional certification scheme for RAC technicians.

Webinar for World Ozone Day 2021

The National Ozone Unit facilitated a Talk at the University of the West Indies on Protecting the Ozone Layer: Trinidad and Tobago’s Journey Towards the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol and Roadmap.


The talk highlighted the efforts of Trinidad and Tobago to implement the obligations of the Montreal Protocol and the national phase out programme for ozone depleting substances. It also showcased this country's roadmap for addressing these environmentally damaging chemicals in the future.




WOD 2021 Talk at Atlantic LNG

A Webinar was held virtually by the National Ozone Unit for  the Atlantic LNG Company of Trinidad and Tobago on Ozone Protection and the Montreal Protocol. The talk highlighted the National Cooling Strategy for Trinidad and Tobago, work of the Montreal Protocol and the NOU TT. The talk was facilitated by Ms. Neera Singh who is attached to the NOU TT

Presentation at the Workshop on Delivering Energy Efficient and Climate Friendly Cooling through National Cooling Action Plans

The Cool Coalition and UNDP hosted a workshop on “Delivering Energy Efficient and Climate Friendly Cooling through National Cooling Action Plans”.

The workshop brought together participants from Latin America and the Caribbean, linking them with experts to discuss how to develop and implement National Cooling Action Plans including challenges, opportunities and solutions, and to identify short-term regional priority activities for implementation.

Trinidad and Tobago presented on the development and implementation of its National Cooling Strategy.

The National Ozone Unit held a virtual sensitization session on August 9, 2021 with officers who assist in monitoring the imports and exports of substances controlled by the Montreal Protocol. These officers are crucial to ensuring that this country continues to meet and exceed all national obligations under the Protocol.
