Webinar held by National Ozone Unit and the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Industry Association on World Refrigeration Day- June 26 2021

World Refrigeration Day June 26 2021

The National Ozone Unit of Trinidad and Tobago joins the rest of the world in celebration of the people and technologies responsible for creating and maintaining the world we live in, a world dependent upon temperature-controlled environments.

World Refrigeration Day is an international awareness campaign established by the World Refrigeration Day Secretariat to raise the profile of the refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat-pump sector and focuses attention on the significant role that the industry and its technology play in modern life and society. It draws attention to wonderful engineering and science that is all around us every day. Refrigeration is at the very heart of modern life. It enables people to live, travel and work comfortably. It saves lives. It enables people to achieve.

For example, surgeons operate in air-conditioned hospitals. Chilled vaccines are delivered safely to millions in need. Low-carbon heating solutions (heat-pumps) keep people warm. Food is delivered in hygienically safe conditions. Humans travelled to the moon in a temperature-controlled rocket. We play sports on artificially made ice and snow. Artists perform in air-conditioned theatres.

World Refrigeration Day was the idea of refrigeration consultant Stephen Gill, former president of the Institute of Refrigeration in the UK.

The inaugural World Refrigeration Day  on June 26 2019 was an immediate monumental success when more that 800 physical events took place in at least 153 countries around the world.

In 2020, the theme for World Refrigeration Day –  #ColdChain4Life – celebrated the importance of the refrigerated cold chain in sustaining life. The cold chain links producers and growers across the world to the domestic refrigerator in our kitchens, and it is essential for so much more than food. Vaccines must remain chilled until they are used by medical professionals around the world, and the cold chain is essential for blood transfusions and organ donor transport and storage

The WRD 21 campaign will focus on careers in the refrigeration,  air-conditioning and heat pumps industry and is titled “Cooling Champions: Cool Careers for a Better World”. The goal of the campaign is to inspire students and young professionals – for both men and women – in all countries, encouraging them to meet the challenges faced in their communities. The National Ozone Unit through the Environment Policy and Planning Division of the Ministry of Planning and Development will be hosting a series of webinars to raise awareness on the importance of energy efficient, low carbon technologies in the context of sustainable cooling while highlighting the work of our cooling champions.

Refrigeration is at the very heart of modern life. More than 15 million people are employed worldwide in the refrigeration sector. The total number of refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat-pump systems in operation worldwide is around 5 billion. Those systems provide the conditions we require for health, comfort, worker productivity, manufacturing, and essential environments for food, pharmaceuticals, and digital data. Dedicated professionals design, build, maintain, and regulate them as well as educate a new generation of practitioners.

Opportunities within the industry abound for young people with a wide range of career aspirations. Advanced cooling technologies need to be implemented in order to expand life required environmental conditions while meeting sustainability requirements of international climate and ozone protection accords.  A new generation of cooling champions – engineers, technicians, researchers, educators, policy experts and executives – are needed to create controlled environments modern live requires. The benefits of reaching into a wide diversity of communities for promising talent will be a high campaign priority.

Meeting with GEF EE in RAC Project, Shepherd's Inn and Green T&T

As work continues in implementation of the Global Environmental Facility funded project Promoting Energy Efficiency in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC), discussions were held with Shepherd's Inn, Green T&T, the National Ozone Unit and the Project Management Unit to explore their possible collaboration in this project. The overall goal of this  four year project  is to create a sustained market change towards the adoption of low-carbon RAC technologies in Trinidad and Tobago, which will deliver multiple benefits at the local, regional and global levels. Implementation of this project is being facilitated by the United Nations Development Programme.

The National Ozone Units explores collaboration with Green T&T for Tourism Sector RAC Awareness

Members of the National Ozone Unit held an exploratory meeting with the team at Green T&T which is an ENGO with a mandate to improve the competitiveness and profitability of the Caribbean’s hospitality and tourism sector, through the implementation of green international standards and certification programmes, education and research.

Participants discussed potential areas of collaboration in engaging the tourism sector in the efforts of improved efficiency in the refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC). Several areas were discussed included collaborating in the dissemination of information and other technical capacity assistance to the sector through funding related to ozone protection.
