Session on Refrigerant Life Cycle Mangament

The National Ozone Unit hosted a session on Refrigerant Life Cycle Management, which took place at the University Inn Conference Centre, St. Augustine on Friday, 31st January, 2025. Lifecycle Refrigerant Management (LRM) is an approach that focuses on avoiding and reducing refrigerant leaks, promoting refrigerant recovery, and increasing reclamation rates to mitigate unnecessary refrigerant use and emissions.

The seminar featured a distinguished guest speaker of the Montreal Protocol Mr. Roberto de Aguiar Peixoto.

Mr Peixoto has served as:

Co-chair of the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP)
Co-chair of the Refrigeration Technical Options Committee (TOC).

Project to explore digital monitoring and management tools to enhance energy efficiency and reduce emission of green-house gases in the cold chain sector

The National Ozone Unit (NOU) is currently taking part in a project demonstrating digital monitoring and management tools to enhance energy efficiency and reduce emission of green-house gases in the space cooling and cold chain sectors. As part of the developmental stage of this project the NOU  hosted a United Nations Development Programme Consultant to explore potential pilot sites for the agro processing sector,

The pilots will form part of a larger project which will support this country to pilot digital tools for monitoring and managing cold chain systems to reduce emission of the green-house gases, reduce energy consumption and associated electricity costs, and improve overall maintenance of cooling system proactively.

Digitalization is an innovative approach that can contribute to the implementation of the Kigali Amendment by monitoring the energy performance of existing and new installed cooling equipment and system, identifying HFC refrigerant leakage and consequently reduce HFC consumption, and optimizing system setting and design for energy efficiency.

Training of the Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Inspectorate

The National Ozone Unit continued its 2025 border control training with a session with officers of the Pesticides and Toxic Chemicals Inspectorate. The training incorporated information on the Montreal Protocol as it relates to the fumigation sector and suitable alternatives for Methyl Bromide which is only allowed for quarantine and preshipment purposes. It also incorporated information on the refrigeration and air conditioning sector specifically as it relates to the Kigali Amendment and the phase down of HFCs as well as the use of the alternative refrigerant hydrocarbon.

Border Control Training - Plant Quarantine

The National Ozone Unit began its 2025 border control training with a session with officers of the Plant Quarantine Division. The training incorporated information on the Montreal Protocol as it relates to the fumigation sector and suitable alternatives for Methyl Bromide which is only allowed for quarantine and preshipment purposes.
