Women in the Environment Awards Ceremony 2025

 


In celebration of environmental stewardship and in recognition of International Women’s Day and the EMA’s 30th anniversary, the Environmental Management Authority (EMA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Planning and Development, hosted the Women in the Environment Awards Ceremony 2025 on March 14.

The awards ceremony honoured 30 women, and five special awardees, who have made transformative contributions to environmental conservation and sustainable development in Trinidad and Tobago. Their contributions span a variety of fields, including forestry, wildlife rehabilitation, climate action, education for sustainability, environmental law and justice, among others. 

At the Awards Dr. Marissa Gowrie, Deputy Environmental Manager and National Ozone Officer was recognized in the category of Wildlife Rehabilitation, Law/Environmental Justice, Climate Action and Agriculture.

Among her environmental activities, Dr. Gowrie has overseen the successful implementation to date of this country's national obligations under the Montreal Protocol which involves the phase out of ozone depleting substances. She represents Trinidad and Tobago at the regional and international fora particularly as it relates to negotiations under the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and its Montreal Protocol. In 2011-2014, and in 2022 she held one of three Vice Presidency posts to the Bureau of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. In 2017 she was internationally recognized as a recipient of one of fifteen individual awards from the United Nations Environment Programme for policy and implementation of the Montreal Protocol. At the 2022 commemoration of International Women’s Day she was highlighted by the Montreal Protocol as one of five women of the Montreal Protocol making a difference and leading the charge on environmental protection to build a more sustainable future for all.

In 2024, she was recognized by the United Nations Environment Programme Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean for her more than two decades of service to the successful implementation of the Montreal Protocol.
